First Year Seminars

The gateway course to the Loyola Core is the First-Year Seminar (FYS). This issues-based, interdisciplinary seminar introduces students to college-level thinking and learning, as well as the Jesuit values at the core of a Loyola education.

A list of current or upcoming FYS courses can be found on the public Loyola Online Records Access system (LORA):

  • Choose “Schedule of Classes,” then select the appropriate term in the upper-left corner, then scroll through the list of topics and choose “First Year Seminar”
  • Under the “Days, Times, Location” column, “MWF” means the course meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. “TR” means every Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Click “View Syllabus” for a detailed course-description, assignments, and additional information

First-Year Seminars and the First-Year Experience

The First-Year Seminars are part of Loyola’s First-Year Experience which integrates students into the Loyola learning environment. The experience features additional programs that help students make connections between their academic work, their out-of-class experiences, and Loyola’s values and mission.
